REVIEW: Encore Theatre’s ‘Into the Wild’ has great music & star (and potential)

May 02, 2017

Being confronted with Christopher McCandless’ true tragic tale – now being told via “Into the Wild” at Dexter’s Encore Theatre – during young adulthood is a very different experience from watching it unfold as a parent. As a teen or twentysomething, you think, “He’s so gutsy and true to himself!” while the older you thinks, “Dear God, why did he plot this doomed course for himself?!”

It’s like generational “Rashomon.” You’re seeing the same story, but your subjective filter skews how you perceive this cult figure.

UM grad stars in musical adaptation of ‘Into the Wild’

April 27, 2017

You might not think it’s an obvious candidate for a musical, but you would apparently be wrong.

“Into the Wild,” Jon Krakauer’s wrenching account of a privileged young man, Christopher McCandless, who starved to death while trying to live by his wits in the Alaskan outback, topped the bestseller charts.

And at Dexter’s Encore Musical Theatre outside Ann Arbor, the musical stage version had its world premiere in a production that will run through May 7.

A musical, you say?

Go, Go, Go see “Into the Wild” at Encore Musical Theatre (Review)

April 15, 2017

Let me preface this by writing that Into the Wild at the Encore Musical Theatre Company is a developmental premier of a new musical with aspirations to get to Broadway. It will get there eventually and you should see it now while you can. And you should not miss the superstar performance of Conor Ryan, but I will get to that later. While it is technically a workshop of the show, it is hard to call it that because everything here is so well polished that it is almost hard to remember that this is a work-in-progress and will still change and grow over time.

‘Into The Wild’: A soulful tragedy brought to astonishing light at Encore Musical Theatre

April 15, 2017

DEXTER, Mich.–It’s not a story that lends itself to an elevator pitch to a Broadway producer: It’s a musical based on the story of a young man who starved to death in Alaska.

But that’s exactly what the writers of Into The Wild are hoping for as they workshop the new musical at The Encore Musical Theatre here. The show, written by Niko Tsakalakos (music and lyrics) and Janet Allard (book and lyrics) and directed by Mia Walker, is based on the book and film of the same title.

Encore Theatre goes "Into the Wild" with a musical about Christopher McCandless

April 14, 2017

The developmental premiere of the new stage musical adaptation of Into the Wild opens this weekend at The Encore Theatre. Dexter theater premieres first musical version of "Into the Wild"

April 13, 2017

25 years ago this month, a recent college graduate named Christopher McCandless hitchhiked to Alaska. He then hiked into the wilderness, using an old mountain road called the Stampede Trail.Conor Ryan plays Christopher McCandless in the new musical "Into The Wild"A few months later, on Sept. 6, a hunter found him dead inside an old bus.Writer Jon Krakauer told this puzzling story in his book Into the Wild which was later adapted into a 2007 film directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch. Now, the story of the young man who called himself "Alexander Supertramp" has been turned into a stage musical. Into The Wild opens tomorrow night (Friday, April 14) at the Encore Musical Theatre Company in Dexter.

Show with big-time dreams getting tryout in Dexter

April 12, 2017

When he was living in New York, Dan Cooney, a Broadway veteran performer from Michigan who co-founded Dexter’s Encore Musical Theatre Company in 2009, was tapped by former Yale School of Drama classmate Janet Allard for a couple of workshop readings and a demo recording of her brand-new musical, “Into the Wild.”

“And he kept saying, ‘You know, I have a theater in Michigan,’ ” says Allard, who wrote the show’s book and co-wrote its lyrics.
